Unexpected Gratefulness

My needs are basic and my wants are few. Things I want more of are minutes and hours with family. Food and shelter are more plentiful/spacious than I deserve.

There are, however, some things about which I complain and actually might enjoy more if there were less. This past Sunday I saw a “more is less” example that reminded me to be grateful.

When Hubby and I need to travel on a Sunday, our practice is to leave early in the morning and find a place of worship along our route. This past weekend we hit the jackpot (so to speak) by arriving in a large city mid-morning. Here, we had our choice of mega-churches located along the interstate service drive.

We selected a large church where we entered the huge foyer filled with chatting people. Many strategically located signs provided information
  • Reception Desk
  • Worship Center
  • Nurseries
  • Children's Area
  • Youth Area
  • Breakfast Café
  • Coffee Bar
  • Offices

– but no easy to locate restroom signs. We had to ask. (Did I mention that we were traveling?)

Ten minutes prior to service time found us situated in the sanctuary. Being early allowed us time to:

·       count down minutes to starting time by following clocks on two large screens.
·       wonder when people occupying the lobby would arrive for worship.
·       watch preparations taking place on the stage.

At around 2:00 and counting, worshippers rushed in (many with coffee cups) and most were seated by the time the clocks hit zero. At that precise moment, a guitar strummed the beginning notes of the first worship song.

Thirteen minutes later, we finished that song. (“We” is used loosely here since I did not know the song and, therefore, was not singing.) Now, about gratefulness. This brief song being sung over and over for thirteen minutes made me realize how grateful I am that the worship leader at my church knows how to bring a song to closure. Short-term, I was grateful the second song lasted for only six minutes and we could sit down.

Following one hour and twenty-five minutes of singing, prayer, offering, sermon, and communion, the service of baptism began. We are not in the habit of leaving services early, but our goal was to reach home before dark. We left

Note to self: On next trip locate a little church – preferably in a small town.

More Traveling

This week will find us on the road again. This time we will be in Colorado. Of course, I’m always excited to go back to where I grew up. I enjoy the mountains and beautiful weather.

During our many travels, we have run across a lot of interesting things. Some of them are even quite unusual.

This 24' X 30' Van Gough reproduction is displayed on an 80' easel in Goodland, Kansas. It can be seen from Interstate 70.

The steeples of the beautiful Cathedral of the Plains can also be seen from Interstate 70. Going into the little town of Victoria, Kansas, to tour this cathedral is time well spent.

Arriving in Grand Junction, Colorado, where we had hotel reservations for the Palisade Peach Festival,  Hubby and I were surprised to see Air Force One parked at the airport. We saw the President’s motorcade headed back to the airport, but the peach festivities were cut short for us because of our car being confined to the hotel parking.

While shopping and sight-seeing in downtown Chicago, I spotted “American Gothic” in the form of two sculptures.

I love discovering unusual things. Even though I have resided for twenty-two years in Colorado, maybe this week will I will run across something I have not seen in the past. Hope so!

Making Memories

Grandson, Jacob Walker, and his wife Nicole came to visit us July 20 - 22. The same day they left, we traveled to Michigan to visit our daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Michael Mruzek. While in Michigan we enjoyed:
  • a great day at Greenfield Village.
  • a tour of Jo and Michael’s “home-in-progress.”
  • gourmet meals cooked by Jo and Michael.
  • time with Grandson, Kyle Donovan, and his wife Kristi.
  • time with Granddaughter, Megan Fuller.
  • holding and playing with Great-Grandchildren, Sophia & Greyson Fuller and Mackenzie Donovan.
  • shopping in historic Tecumseh, MI.
  • a craft fair in Ann Arbor, MI.
  • Sunday worship at St. Andrew Church in Saline, MI.

On July 28, we motored to Chicago where we visited with Daughter-in-Law, Nancy Powers, and Granddaughter, Katy Powers. While in Chicago we:
  • had a delicious lunch at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center.
  • went to the site of the new Salvation Army Freedom Center.
  • enjoyed delicious cherry pie cupcakes at a downtown bakery.
  • got a new recipe for “Hoosier Pie.”

Late that afternoon we traveled to Bourbonnais, IL, to see our son, Merrill Powers, who was teaching a one-week class at ONU. While in Bourbonnais we:
  • toured the ONU Campus.
  • talked with a young man who is on the Chicago Bears staff.
  • saw where the Bears train (no Bear sightings, though).
  • enjoyed dinner at a restaurant of Merrill’s choice.

On July 29th we arrived home. Tired, but happy!
