Happy Family Times

This summer and fall, we attended two more weddings of grandchildren. Hubby performed both ceremonies.

In July we traveled to the scenic mountain town of McCall, Idaho.

In a picturesque setting on the grounds of a charming mountain lodge, grandson, Jesse Walker, was married to Jeni Higgins. Everything was perfect. It was wonderful to see family and friends and to meet Jeni’s lovely family.

October found us in Michigan while the beautiful autumn leaves were in full color. Granddaughter, Joanna Walker, and Aaron Rusch were married in a lovely ceremony in the church where Joanna attended until she went off to college. The wedding was picture perfect and, again, we saw family (this trip seeing all five of our great-grandchildren). We had previously met Aaron’s family, but enjoyed being able to celebrate with them.

At the Michigan reception, Hubby and I were honored as the couple that had been married longer than any other couple in attendance. (Another couple had been married only one month less.)

It’s Pumpkin Time

A headline on the front cover of a magazine to which I subscribe tempts me to discover “50 Recipes With Canned Pumpkin.”  So far I’ve won out over temptation and ignored the recipes. This is because I already know what should be done with canned pumpkin.

1.     Make pumpkin pie.

2.     Make pumpkin pie.

3.     Make pumpkin pie.

4.     Make pumpkin pie.

5.     Make pumpkin pie.  …

… 50. Make pumpkin pie.

Then off to the grocery I go to purchase more pumpkin.

Change

•    Growing up in Colorado, I was Mama's helper, Daddy’s little girl, a sister, a student, a friend, a ball-player, an ice-skater, a hiker, and a bike rider.

•    As a young adult living in the mid-west, I was a daughter, a sister, a college student, a wife, a mother, an aunt, a friend, a homemaker, a seamstress, a decorator, and a cook.

•    As a career person, I was an elementary school teacher, a middle school teacher, and a university professor.

•    As a retired person, once again in beautiful Colorado, I renewed old friendships, established new friendships, traveled, hiked, rode horses, wrote a novel, edited a community newsletter, and served on the board of my church.

•    Now? I’m still retired but located back in Kansas. The important roles in my life are wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Of less importance is my position as full-time homemaker. Folks at the church I attended for many years now ask me my name. Though my career was here, the people in my community know me only as the lady who moved from Colorado to Kansas. The question I hear often is, “Why?” The answer is always, “Family.”
